California Gay Studies Bill Finds Its Way to the Governor’s Inkwell…
The California State Legislature passed a Bill on Tuesday that would require Public Schools in the state to teach the historical accomplishments of Lesbian, Gay, and Transgendered people. It now makes its way to the desk of Democratic Governor Jerry Brown, who has 12 days to either sign or veto the Bill. The State Assembly passed the bill on a 49-25 vote, with no support from any Republican representative.
Brown has not said whether he is for or against the bill, and some school districts in the San Francisco Bay area have already added such subjects to the standard curriculum in history or other social studies classes. The Bill is intended to protect the historical accounts of said individuals under a current requirement that groups historically discriminated against, such as Blacks, Latinos and Native Americans be taught about in California Public Schools.
Progressive Proposed Curricular Revisions…
Mark Leno, the Senator (D) from San Francisco who sponsored this legislation, hopes Mr. Brown will sign this Bill because “Bottom Line, its only beneficial to share with the students the broad diversity of the Human Experience and that our democracy protects everyone.”
