Healthy Marriages

When I asked my wife to marry me, I had a clear idea of what to expect. I had a picture of us living in my flat, buying a house, having children and growing old together. Although she turned me down the first time, we did get married and my vision of the future is basically coming true.

Of course, these words are a drastically shortened version of a very, very long story, and miss out all the adventures along the way – but for us, the plan has worked. We are still together after 23 years of a helta-skelta, sometimes white-knuckle ride, and expect to be sharing breakfast on a balcony in Greece when we can step off the treadmill of life.

Did we Have a Choice to Marry or Co-Habit?

Back in the 1980s there was a choice. Although most people still chose marriage, the shame that used to exist in "living together" was not expressed anything like as strongly as say just 30 years before. However, it was a fact that everyone I knew of the older generation were either married or lonely.
